When you think of a front porch, you may think of it as a main entrance to the home. For many people, it is a direct or indirect way to socialize. Front porch sitting is a staple for most urban areas in the U.S., such as Detroit. It contributes to the atmosphere of the neighborhood. It is a great way to connect with neighbors, and it can even help boost community security and help prevent crime.1 During the summer of 2006, NPR’s All Things Considered even broadcasted a series of stories dedicated to the role of the front porch in American life and literature.2
In 2019, Ms. Daisy Jackson and her family had been in their Islandview home for five generations. She, too, lives in a community that values all that the front porch has to offer. “They check on each other,” says our Community Relations Coordinator, Jennine Spencer. For a long time, Ms. Jackson’s porch was caving in, and she and her husband had been unable to partake in that cultural staple of her neighborhood.
Last year, Mrs. Jackson was awarded a WeCARE Home Repair grant, and they now are able to enjoy their front porch as a gathering spot and however else they please. She now returns the kindness by serving on GenesisHOPE’s Board of Directors and volunteering several hours a week to deliver food boxes to her neighbors in need during this national emergency. Thank you, Ms. Jackson!
